20/21 March 2010. Anglesey Circuit. Round 1

Being local, we didn’t need to be at the circuit until Saturday morning, however in order to get a good pitch we set up on Friday afternoon and Ady volunteered to stay overnight as “security” as we went home for a good nights sleep. Thanks Ade!

Saturday

Arriving Saturday morning to find a bleary eyed Ady and a tent that had taken a good hammering by the wind and rain overnight, Bob swiftly decided that, knowing the circuit well, he didn’t need the practice session and he wasn’t going to risk throwing the bikes down the grass in the rain just for the hell of it, so plenty of time to sort the tent out, on with the BBQ and some sausage baps.

By 2pm the clouds had lifted and the wind and sun was drying everything out, so it was decided to put one session in on the CBR and one on the G50 Matchless to blow away any cobwebs. All done and dusted it was a wave goodbye to Ady as we all again set off home for a good nights sleep.

Sunday

Arriving Sunday morning again to find a bleary eyed Ady, although I think Carlsberg rather than a lack of sleep was the cause this time. The weather was bright and dry and all looked set for a good day. Practice went well, Bob was happy with the new rubber and the settings seemed ok, all we had to do now was crack open the sausages and wait for our first race due to start at 1:40pm.

Support was fantastic; with about 15 of you turning up, the tent soon filled up as did the rack above the BBQ coals. Everyone was looking forward to a fun packed day, good racing, food and drink when disaster struck.

Andrew Parry advised me to start today’s review with the words “Today was a learning curve” and how right he was, our decision to buy a set of wets on the day, if on the off chance we needed them, was thrown into chaos when the heavens opened, the track soaked and the mobile tyre shop didn’t turn up. With a brand new set of Supercorsa dry’s and a spare set of rims with no wets, pray for the rain to stop was the best we could do.

It didn’t and Bob exited the pit lane, aboard, probably the only Bike on dry tyres.

25 seconds slower per lap than practice, we all agreed he’d done well bringing the bike and himself back in one piece. He described it as the scariest 6 laps for a long time and our afternoon on the CBR was over!

He did however race the Classic G50 twice, returning 2 second places, so well done Bob on that.

So as Andrew Parry said, today was a learning curve, our assumption that tyres would be available on the day backfired and our first meeting ruined as a consequence.

Finally, once again a massive thank you for the support, we’re sorry poor judgment didn’t allow you to see the bike perform although I think everyone still seemed to enjoy the day. Oulton Park next on the 10th April, hope to see a few of you there and let’s see if we can get our season out of the starting blocks.
